The Tutorial
1. SWAP: Go Control panel>System>Performance and click virtual memory. Select "Let me specify my own virtual memory settings". If you have more than 1 harddrive, put the swap file to the other one (the disk that doesn´t contain windows) Set "Minimum" to 128 and "Maximum" to 128 So what this means? This means that 128 MB from your harddisk is reserved to windows. This doesn´t mean that window uses 128 MB swap at the whole time. Why should you do this? Windows doesn´t have to use any CPU to calculate how much harddisk should be reserved (i.e. how big is win386.swp). Note: if you do some very memory consuming work with your computer, you should increase the value. 128 is enough for majority of users. 2. FileCaches Download Cacheman, it´s freeware. Within cacheman enable all and select Win98>power user. 3. StartUp Use Run>'msconfig.exe' to remove all the stupid programs that starts automatically when you start the computer. If you don´t have msconfig, use some other program. E.g. RegCleaner. 4. TWEAK-UI Put your win98 CD in, go to \TOOLS\RESKIT\POWERTOY and click Tweakui.inf with your second mouse button and select form the popup-menu "install". (If you have Win98 SE, download this program from here. Reboot and goto control panel>Tweak ui. Click general tab and uncheck everything you don´t need from "effects" box. Click Explorer tab and uncheck the two items form "StartUp" box. Click IE4 tab and uncheck everything you don´t need. Note that if you uncheck "IE4 enabled" that does NOT mean that you can´t use IE4. Click My Computer tab and remove you floppydisk A: if you do not use your floppydisk often. When you need it next time, write "a:" to the address bar of you explorer (NOT Internet explorer) and press enter. 5. Use your head Do not use any program that claims to free memory, because they slows your system! Why, you might ask. It´s very simple: Free memory is wasted memory. Windows uses some free memory to cache things. Caching makes things faster (it´s faster to get stuff from cache, what´s in RAM, than from HD). (E.g. Linux uses all the free memory for caches) Windows flushes (ie. frees) caches to get more free memory when it is needed. Like when you run a game or some big application. Now these 'memory cleaners' make windows to empty those caches, the result is that the amount of free memory LOOKS better, but system runs slower, because the caches are empty. Also using such programs you very easily can make your windows to swap and then your system runs really slow. |
